Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships Plan
(i) British Chevening Scholarships: This programme is run by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) of the British Government FCO is committed to encouraging talented young people from outside Britain to study and get trained in the United Kingdom at a formative stage of their careers to enable them to return home with enhanced academic and professional skills and with an appreciation of Indo-British cultural relations. The scheme provides over 3000 awards annually to a wide variety of countries. British Chevening Scholarships are available fro study in various subject fields and are given to those wishing to follow full time ine0year postgraduate (or occasionally second first degree courses), or pursue full time research at UK institutions of higher education. It is now FCO’s largest scholarship programme globally with an annual budget of £ 1.3 million supporting 90 new and approximately 70 continuing scholarships each year
The India programme began in 1987/88. The British Council Division (BCD) offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai manage this programme. Specific details are available from the Scholarships Section and Educational Counselling Service Centre of these offices. Information is also available from the British libraries in several cities.
(ii) Recently, over 60 British universities and colleges have jointly introduced a new package of over 300 scholarships and bursaries and fee discounts worth over £ 700.000. These are primarily for undergraduate, further education (vocational and professional) and “A” level courses. This package is in addition to the 300 plus postgraduate scholarships that are available under the Chevening, Commonwealth, Colombo Plan and other schemes.
(iii) Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship: Awarded for advanced research in modern India studies in history, economics and political sciences and International relations.
(iv) Confederation of British Industry (CBI) Overseas Scholarship: Awarded for advanced professional training in the areas of energy and environment.
(v) Nehru Centenary British Fellowships: Awarded for studies in energy conservation, small business development, English language, economics and International relations.

(vii) Commonwealth Academic Fellowships: Awarded for studies in a wide range of disciplines including medicine and dentistry. Contact Address: University Grants Commission, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi-110002.
(viii) Cambridge Nehru Scholarships: There are four categories of scholarships, viz., (a) Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Trust Scholarships, (b) Nehru Centenary Chevening Scholarships, (C) Cambridge ODA Scholarships and (D) Rajiv Gandhi Cambridge Scholarships, covering a wide range of subjects.
