A. Pre-Metric Scholarships: Scholarships for the children of those engaged in unclean occupation. The scheme introduced by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in 197-78 providers central assistance to State Government on 50:50 basis and 100% to UT Administrations. The Scheme covers day scholars from Class I to X and hostellers from Class III to Class X.
B. Post-Metric Scholarships: This is the most comprehensive scholarship scheme introduced by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and implemented by the Social Welfare Departments of State governments. The value of scholarships includes maintenance allowance, special provisions for students with disabilities, reimbursement of compulsory non-refundable fees, charges for study tours, typing or printing of thesis, book allowance for students pursuing correspondence courses. The scholarship is provide for the duration of the courses. There are two different rates of maintenance allowance for hostellers (ranging from Rs.150.00 to Rs.425.00 per month) and for day-scholars (ranging from Rs.90.00 to Rs.190.00 per month) depending upon the courses and level of studies.
The courses of study are grouped into five categories:
Group A – First degrees and postgraduate degrees in engineering, medicine and agricultural,
Group B – Diploma level courses in engineering and Indian medicine and homoeopathy, degree and postgraduate degree courses in nursing and pharmacy, degree and postgraduate diploma courses in management, chartered and cost accountancy, hotel management, commercial pilot licence, postgraduate study in science subjects, etc.,
Group C – a wide range of certificate level courses in different disciplines, degree and postgraduate degree courses in library science, teacher education, physical education, law, music, fine arts, postgraduate courses in arts and commerce subjects.
Group D – General courses up to graduate level (Second year onwards) and
Group E – Class XI and Class XII in 10 + 2 system.
The scholarships are awarded to students if the total income of their parents or guardians from all sources does not exceed the total income of their parents or guardians from all sources does not exceed Rs.50,920.00 per annum. Full maintenance allowance and full fees are paid to students if the total income does not exceed Rs.38,220.00 per annum. Full maintenance allowance and full fees are paid for Group A course even if the income exceeds this amount. For other Groups, however, half maintenance and full fees are payable. The details of schemes are announced in May-June by the State governments.
C. Upgradation of Merit of SC/ST Students: Besides the post-Metric scholarships, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has introduced a centrally Sponsored Scheme of Upgradation of merit of SC/ST students on the basis of cent% grants to States. The scheme provides for remedial and special coaching for SC/ST students studying in Class IX to XI. At present, the provision is for a total of 1045 students allotted to different States. The coaching starts at Class IX level and continues till a student has completed Class XII. The State Social Welfare Departments are responsible for the implementation of the scheme.
D. National Overseas Scholarships and Passage Grant for Higher Studies abroad: national Overseas Scholarships are awarded for Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, doctoral and postdoctoral studies. The duration varies from 1½ year to 3½ years. The value of the scholarship includes return air passage by economy class. Passage Grant is provided to students who have been awarded merit scholarships for postgraduate and research studies abroad which do not cover passage cost. E. Public Sector Undertakings: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd., (Tel Bhavan, Dehradun-248003, UP) – for graduate degree in engineering and postgraduate degree in geology and geophysics and business administration courses.

Engineering India Ltd. (Deputy General Manager (HRD) EI Bhavan (4th Floor), Bhikaji Cama Place, New Delhi-110066) – for studying graduate course in engineering.
Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd. (FACT) (Deputy General Manager (Personnel-Establishment, Udyogmandal-683501, Kerala) – for candidates who have registered as article clerks with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
Hidustan Organic Chemicals Ltd (Rasayani-410207, Raigad, Maharashtra) – for candidates studying in the pre-final year of engineering courses (graduate and postgraduate) in the field of chemical, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation engineering, MBA and M.Sc. (Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and Microbiology)
National Thermal Power Corporation, NTPC Bhawan, SCOPE Complex, Core 7, Lodhi Road, New Delhi-110003) – for candidates studying degree course in engineering (electrical, electronics and instrumentation).
F. Loan Scholarships: National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation (Fifth Floor, NCUI Building, 3 Siri Institutional Area, Khel Gaon Marg, New Delhi-110018) – has two schemes: (a) Aakanksha – educational loans scheme for pursuing course sin engineering, medicine, management, computers, both at graduate and postgraduate levels and hospitality management at diploma level and (b) Samridhi for studying in any government recognised institution (including distance learning mode).
G. Miscellaneous Scholarships: The Director General of Civil Aviation has a scheme for awarding 40 scholarships/stipends to the SC/ST candidates selected for flying training up to Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) standards in the age group of 17-20 years, should have passed 10 + 2 or equivalent examination with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. The annual income of the parents should not exceed Rs.44,500. The award covers training charges, living expenses, cost of books, travelling expenses, cost of insurance and licence and medicine examination fees.
